President Bill Bechman presents 2008 Annual Report

The Heart & Soul Auction is celebrating its twentieth year. The Fund was established in 1988 by philanthropically-minded All Souls volunteers to fund the All Souls Outreach Programs. It was established as separate from the church as an independent 501(C) 3 organization. Because the Fund is for nonreligious, community outreach programs, employers can match donors' gifts and foundations can lend support. The mission of the Heart & Soul Charitable Fund is to provide aid to segments of the New York area community who are living in marginalized situations by identifying and directly funding groups for whom small grants and ongoing involvement of the Fund will make a major difference. The Fund is an important source of funding, support and advice for its selected grantees and aims to build long-term relationships. Our website, www.heartandsoulfund.org is administered by Heather Floyd, Tom Reece and Mary-Ella Holst, and it provides wonderful information about the work of Heart & Soul. A beautiful 20th Anniversary Journal was published this year by Marilyn Collins and her team to describe the purpose and history of the Fund.

Warren Yeh is the Chair of the Grants Committee, along with Christina Bellamy, Susanne Forman, Jon Friedland, Ashley Garrett, Mitchel Gray, Kirsten Hilleman, Sandy Reece, and Shaiza Rizavi. Seventeen well-deserving programs received a total of $210,000 in support from Heart & Soul including All Souls Food Programs for Monday Night Hospitality and the Friday Soup Kitchen, and numerous other programs supported by All Souls volunteers. The grants application process and funded programs are described on our website.

In December, we had our Second Annual Invitational Art Sale in Reidy Friendship Hall. Pamela Healey, an accomplished artist, created this remarkable event. Mark Leeds and Nitza Shawriyeh were Co-Chairs and the art selection jury included Mitchel Gray, Lotus Do Brooks and Pamela Healey. Plans are underway for our third Art Sale next fall.

Heart & Soul Board Members are: Bill Bechman, President; Jeff Friedlander, Vice President; Sandy Reece, Secretary; Christine Goodwin, Treasurer; Warren Yeh, Kerianne Flynn, Mark Leeds, Mary-Ella Holst, Thomas Blum, Pamela Healey, Paula Stelzner, Tom Reece, Judy Chang, Li Yu, Galen Guengerich, and our executive director, Elizabeth Fairfax Brown. Our Heart & Soul office is in pro-bono space, thanks to Mark Leeds and the law firm, Greenberg Traurig.

The Fund is supported each year by proceeds from our February Auction held at Christie's with Stephen S. Lash, a founder of the Fund, as our extraordinary Auctioneer. The 20th Anniversary Auction will be held on February 19, 2009 at Christie's. Our Auction Co-Chairs, James and Kerianne Flynn, have created a remarkable evening to raise funds for the Heart & Soul programs. The inaugural Forrest Church Award will be presented to former President Bill Clinton. There will be a Silent Auction, a Live Auction and a speech by President Clinton: "Embracing our Common Humanity." Tickets are available on our website or at the coffee hour table.

We thank everyone for their support through the years in raising funds for the All Souls Outreach Programs. And we sincerely appreciate the many All Souls volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to the outreach programs.
