Gail McGovern, President and CEO of the American Red Cross, has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the Forrest Church Award. The award will be presented at the 24th annual gala of The Heart & Soul Charitable Fund on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at Christie's Auction House in New York City.
Ms. McGovern is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross, the nation's leading emergency response and blood services organization. Since joining the institution in 2008, she has overseen the American Red Cross response to multiple high-profile disasters, including the Haiti earthquake, record-breaking tornadoes, floods and wildfires that affected the U.S, as well as numerous hurricanes and tropical storms during her tenure.
On March 10, 2011, she was appointed as one of 10 members on the President's Management Advisory Board and serves as the only nonprofit leader on this White House panel. Prior to joining the Red Cross, McGovern was a Professor at the Harvard Business School.
The award, named for the late Rev. Dr. Forrest Church, author, humanitarian, is given to an individual who demonstrates a capacity for moral courage and selflessness while working towards the betterment of our world. Former recipients include Dr. Paul Farmer, founder of the international health and social justice organization Partners In Health; former U.S. President Bill Clinton; Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; and the Hon. Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York.
Ms. McGovern will accept the award in person at the event, on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Christie's Auction House in New York.
